Why I support John McCain

As some of you may know, I have been talking this year about voting for a third party candidate. My reasoning was that the bet way to reform the Republican party was to punish it with a loss.

In recent weeks my views have changed. I still like the idea of showing the Republican party that I hate their flip-flopping, weak-kneed politics by voting for somebody like Ron Paul, however, it strikes me as incredibly unwise in this election.

When John McCain chose Palin as his VP, it persuaded me to support his campaign. McCain himself is disappointing in many ways, but I believe his running mate will be incredibly good for this country.

Boycotting the McCain/Palin ticket would do us no good. It would simply hand the ticket to Obama, and allow him to reshape American politics for years to come. We must continue to fight hard on issues like abortion and traditional marriage. There is no retreat on the frontiers of life and national morality. As the church we are to be salt and light in every frontier. I present to you this electoral season, that I believe you will best be a steward of these interests by voting for the McCain/Palin ticket.

Thoughts on John 1:1-18

The apostle John's writings flow beautifully. This description of Christ's "invasion" (to borrow from C.S. Lewis) of our planet never ceases to entrance me. I can't read the Greek to fully appreciate his prose, but if the English does it justice, this is one incredible introduction.

Every sentence is packed with such rich credentials so that by the end of a few short paragraphs, you are awestruck by this character 'Logos".

I think of the many times I hear a speaker introduced by his degrees and books and accomplishments. And no matter who they are, their prestige pales in light of this incredible doxology to the Word.

Within the first sentence the Word is identified as God! He is the source of everything, the light, the life...and...

We didn't recognize him.

We didn't recognize the greatest person to ever walk the planet.

Only those who were divinely enlightened recognized Him.

The rest killed Him.

I don't know how anybody can think there is anything good in humanity after reading this passage. If people didn't recognize Christ when He walked among them, what is to make you think that anyone could recognize the invisible God now, and call out for salvation.

Only those who are called and enlightened by God can ever accept Christ. The theology of election is hideous to some, because it makes the Logos look

Huge

and it makes us look

incredibly small.

But that's the right perspective, isn't it?
